Your own web site greatly and positively impresses me. It is for the
first time, that I have seen a site so professionally prepared –
congratulations!!
I live in Lublin and I was born in Żółkiewka, where Mr. Edmund Wajszczuk
worked as a physician before the war.
I remember that my grandmother, Wiktoria Wac, especially, and also my
mother, Zofia Wlodarczyk, often mentioned this name with marks of great
respect. My grandmother recalled that my father had been a friend of Mr.
Wajszczuk’s sons: Antoni and Wojciech. I found their first names in the
family tree for, I must confess, I did not remember them. I can remember,
though, that grandmother told us, that three of the Wajszczuks’ children
were killed in the Warsaw Uprising. Grandmother Wiktoria and my mother
Zofia often spoke of this. My father, Kazimierz Wac, died in Żółkiewka
in 1950, when he was 27 years old. I was only three years old then and I
do not remember much. In any case, the Wajszczuk family was respected
and deservedly esteemed in Żółkiewka. It is a pity that, in course of
your family peregrinations, when you came to Żółkiewka – the journey
must have been scarcely fruitful, for there are no photographs and no
special notice. Last year we have founded the Society of Friends of
Żółkiewka – I plan to mention your wonderful web site and maybe find out
some more about doctor Edmund Wajszczuk’s and his family’s stay in our
town. I would also like to use this occasion to inform you that last
year a book written by a Jew from Żółkiewka, Chaim Zylberklang, "Z
Żółkiewki do Izraela" (“From Żółkiewka to Israel”) was issued in Lublin
by Primooffset 20-407 Lublin, ul. Piłsudskiego 24a, tel.081/532-22-03.
Tel./fax 081/532-22-04, ISBN 83-914474-1-3. Doctor Edmund Wajszczuk is
also mentioned there, as a doctor in Żółkiewka.
I am happy that one of the “threads” of your family lives in Lublin,
where I have also been living and working for the last forty years. If I
could be of any help in finding out information about the Wajszczuk
Family, I will do it with pleasure. In the time being, once again with
congratulations regarding your web site and regards for the Wajszczuk

From the 13th
of March 2004.
(...) Just today I have been to a meeting of the
Regional Society of Friends of Żółkiewka (RTPŻ). I spoke of our
correspondence and, mostly, of your worthy Family, only in fragments, for
I do not know many details, unfortunately. It raised much interest among
those who were listening, though the response war scarce, due to the
“young age” of the participants. Even so, I hope to receive new
information, for which I asked. The meetings take place every second
Saturday of the month at 10 o’clock, in the Community Cultural Centre in
Żółkiewka. This year, RTPŻ has in its plans: the issuing of a book
entitled “The History of Żółkiewka and its Whereabouts”, written by Mr.
Kielbasa – chairman of RTPŻ, the making of a list of those inhabitants of
Żółkiewka, who were killed in the First and Second World Wars, the
preparation of a folder and a postcard from the town.
I am in contact with the Grandson of Dr E. Wajszczuk, a historian of arts
from Sopot. If I will get to know any additional information, I shall be
glad to pass them on. In the time being, while inviting you to Lublin and
Żółkiewka, I send cordial greetings.

(...) Napiszę do p. Chaima Zylberklanga o Pana determinacji w poszukiwaniu
(z sukcesem) Jego książki, z pewnością się ucieszy. Na marginesie
zawartości książki, zamieszczono w niej kilka fotografii z mojego albumu
rodzinnego - str.38, 67, 74. Na ostatniej z nich pomyłkowo podpisano
Walery Wac, a powinno być Jan Wac (rodzony brat Walerego). Zdjęcie to
przedstawia moich dziadków - Jana i Wiktorię, a mała stojąca nad babcią
dziewczynka to moja Mama, która zmarła w listopadzie 2002 r. Właśnie,
zagłębiłem się w przeglądanie starych fotografii, doszukując się
podobieństwa postaci Rodziny Wajszczuków (na podstawie porównań z Państwa
stron własnych, ale niestety nie mogę nic znaleźć... Wprawdzie te akurat
zdjęcia, co do których mam przypuszczenia, ze a nuż znajdę, są bardzo małe
i niewyraźne ??? jednak, jakbym słyszał Babcię czy Mamę : "o tutaj, twój
ojciec z kolegą (kolegami) synem doktora Wajszczuka..." Szkoda, ze nie
mogę nic znaleźć. Tymczasem, chce Panu i Jego Rodzinie przesłać
najserdeczniejsze życzenia z okazji zbliżających się Świąt Wielkanocnych,
dużo zdrowia, pogody ducha i wszelkiej pomyślności

Dear Sirs,
It is difficult for me to find people who remember Dr Edmund Wajszczuk
from the time when he was in Żółkiewka. I have only reached two women
living in Lublin – professor Hanna Chrzastek-Spruch and Mrs. Genowefa
Sawicka, my cousin from Żółkiewka, Jan Wac and, as I mentioned before, a
citizen of Jewish nationality, Mr. Chaim Zylberklang. Each of these four
people recall the great kindness and lack of selfishness of Dr Edmund
Wajszczuk, telling me that it was not rare for the doctor to cure people
without payment in the case of poor families. And all without exception
stress the fact that there were many such poor families. Both ladies had
been cured by the doctor as little girls. I met the above mentioned Mrs.
Chrzastek-Spruch only now, surfing in the Internet. She was born in 1933
in Żółkiewka, where her father was the head of the local school and her
mother a teacher. She is a professor of medicine and until last year, she
was the head of the Paediatrics Chair in the Medical Academy of Lublin.
Her husband, who died several years ago, was also well known in Lublin as
a professor of medicine – an urologist. Mrs. Genowefa Sawicka, a close
friend of my Mother, who died two years ago, lives in Lublin and is a wife
and mother to doctors. My cousin Jan Wac from Żółkiewka remembers where Mr.
and Mrs. Wajszczuk lived. He tells me that, unfortunately, their house
burnt in a great fire of Żółkiewka in 1938. It was then, also, that Mr.
and Mrs. Wajszczuk moved to Krasnystaw.
Mr. Zylberklang writes to me in his last letter, from 4.04.2004: “About
the Wajszczuk Family? I would also like to have some contact with them.
And describe my memories about this noble, good man, called Doctor
Wajszczuk. He saved people, also without any money. Please give them my
address. Let them write. And I shall write back. It would be also
worthwhile to write a recollection of him (Dr Wajszczuk – AWW) in my
second edition.” (AWW – Mr. Zylberklang is finishing the correction work
and supplementation of the second edition of his book about Żółkiewka and
his own experiences). Because Mr. Chaim does not use the Internet,
unfortunately, I allow myself, according to his own wish, to pass on his
address (...)
I would also like to talk to Mr. Wieslaw Szkrzydlo, the rector of UMCS
university in Lublin for many years, who had lived in Żółkiewka for a
short period before the war, together with his family. His father was a
postmaster there. It is not excluded that he knows something about your
Family. In the time being I send cordial greeting to you and your families.

Anna Swiderska, I wrote a few words to her today – after all, she directly
is a granddaughter of Mr. E. Wajszczuk, thanks to whom I had heard of your

Dear Sirs,
I have just been looking through your own web site for another and yet
another time... and I noticed a fragment about our meeting in Lublin
during this year’s vacations.
I am very grateful for placing a recount of this meeting and I thank you
for all the warm words written about my family.
It is very nice that stories heard from my Grandmother and Mother have
resulted in such a fruitful contact with you and allowed me to find out
new contacts and new information about your wonderful ancestors through
“discovering” a number of witnesses of those times. How good it is that
you have such a professionally run web site with your family tree. I do my
best to popularise it and, thus, find more of those interested in the
matter, including authors of books about Żółkiewka. The latter use it as a
source of information about facts and events, placing them on the pages of
books that reach a broader group of readers. I find this very pleasing.
I sent a letter to Mr. Grzegorz Kolodziejczyk, who wrote an inscription in
the guest book, and whom I think I know personally, or rather his parents
and family, with which I am related in a way. Until now I have not
received any answer but I still hope that Grzegorz will write something...
In November I shall probably be at a conference in Gdansk, so, if time
permits and Mr. Edmund Leszczylowski approves, I would be glad to meet
with him in Sopot.
